Details
Jawaharlal Nehru was the first prime minister of India (1947-64). In 1919, he joined the Indian National Congress led by Mahatma Gandhi and was elected leader in 1931. As an independent republic under Nehru's premiership, India remained a member of the Commonwealth and pursued a policy of non-alignment in foreign policy.
